ISSSC 2016 Opening Ceremony

This year’s Combined Services Inter Service Snow Sports Competition was declared open by the Chief of  Defence Staff, General Sir Nicholas Houghton GCB CBE ADC Gen. The opening ceremony witnessed all 144 competitors marching out before a distinguished crowd of supporters. This year we have the Australian Defence Force and UK Armed Forces Para Snowsports Team participating in addition to the elite single Service champions from across the Navy, Army and Royal Air Force – a warm welcome to all of you! And of course a huge thank you to all our sponsors, without whom these championships would not be possible. Let the games begin…

This year (2016) marks the 10th anniversary of the Inter Services Snow Sports Championships held in Meribel, France. Personnel from the Army, Navy and Royal Air Force (RAF) compete in various disciplines throughout the week. The Combined Services Winter Sports Association (CSWSA) can trace its roots to pre-war competitions held by some of the pioneers of skiing and bobsledding and celebrates its 65th anniversary in 2016. The Association exists to promote excellence in winter sports within Her Majesty’s Armed Forces, through the provision of annual all ranks competitions organised in a manner which affords prestige to those competing and enables subsequent entry into national and international competitions for the most talented. These sporting opportunities enhance self-discipline, courage and physical fitness; they provide vital recuperation and focus beyond the operational commitments of service personnel. Historically a significant number of servicemen and women have represented Great Britain in winter sports disciplines, a trend which continued in Sochi 2014. The sports supported include the following at annual Inter-Services events: Ski, Snowboard and Telemark Competitions, held in France. Cresta Run held in St Moritz, Switzerland. Ice Sports Competition: Bobsleigh, Skeleton Bobsleigh and Luge, held in Winterberg, Germany. Nordic Competition, including Biathlon, held in Ruhpolding, Germany.
